Numerous improvements in new Econovan

The ever-reliable Econovan has received a range of functional and feature upgrades with the release of the new JH model.

Econovan JH.jpg (14173 bytes)"Econovan has been in Australia for 20 years and has developed a solid reputation as a reliable tool of trade," says Ford light commercial vehicle brand Manager, Kevin Lillie.

"The latest Econovan delivers a range of valuable improvements that will build upon that reputation."

Interior/Exterior
Styling changes have been made to the front and rear of the van. The short wheelbase model can be recognised by the integrated sheetmetal-to-bumper nose. Long wheelbase versions have a silver grille and colour-coded bumper. All models have been fitted with new front bumpers designed to resist damage during low speed impact. Restyled taillights and a new tailgate that improves rear access have also been fitted.

Interior changes include a redesigned dash, new seat trim and fully moulded door trims. Driver visibility, especially in tight locations, has been improved dramatically by lowering the glass in the front doors and windscreen cowl. Improved ventilation and a revised seating position also aid driver comfort.

Mechanically Speaking
The Econovan’s petrol-powered, 2.0 litre engine is standard across the range and has been updated with particular attention being paid to NVH. Gains in fuel economy have also been made.

A five speed manual transmission is fitted to the short and long wheelbase vans. The long wheelbase version also has the option of an automatic, four speed, electronic transmission.

Suspension upgrades to all models have optimised ride and comfort with improved levels of handling and stability. Brake refinements have improved pedal feel, travel and general performance with varying weight loads via a load proportioning system.

Front end structural upgrades also improve occupant safety.

Van Customer Care Plan
The new Econovan is also covered by Ford’s comprehensive ‘Van Customer Care Plan’ which provides a range of services for all Ford vans registered from August 1, 1998, for 3-years/100,000km after registration.

The service has been specifically structured for small business owners and includes roadside assistance, vehicle recovery, urgent message relay and, in some situations, alternative transport if the van is off the road. Provision has also been made for overnight accommodation in some circumstances along with medical advice and assistance.

Pricing and Options
Econovan customers have the option of ordering air-conditioning, power steering and a drivers airbag.

The recommended retail price of the short wheelbase Econovan is $21600, while the long wheel base manual model is $24500. The automatic long wheelbase version retails for $27000.
