Terios gets full surgery -  a facelift & a heart transplant

Daihatsu has launched a stylish, face-lifted Terios in both SX and DX models.

2001_Terios_03.jpg (27710 bytes)The new look Terios features innovative engine and vehicle security technology along with sleeker and more aggressive body styling, while retaining all of its occupant safety, Japanese build quality and value for money offerings.

Replacing the 1.3 litre HC-EJ engine, is an all new 1.3L K3-VE 4-cylinder, twin cam, 16-valve DVVT engine. It is from the same engine family as the Sirion GTvi.

The new powerplant provides a highly efficient package of fuel economy, power, durability, serviceability and low emissions.

Both power and torque have been increased, with the biggest improvement being maximum torque, which has increased by 14% from 105Nm @ 5100 rpm to 120Nm @ 3200rpm. Not only has the torque been increased, but its maximum is now available 1900rpm down the rev range, making it more effective in normal driving conditions.

Maximum power remains at 6000rpm but is increased from 61 kW to 63 kW.

Thanks to DVVT (Dynamic Variable Valve Timing), DLI (Distributor-less Ignition) and Sequential Fuel Injection this new engine has reduced the production of the three major gross pollutants.

The new Terios looks different too. It has had a makeover to produce more integrated, aesthetically pleasing contours and grille.

A Kenwood in-dash CD player has been added to the already high level of standard equipment features, which includes air conditioning, dual airbags, power steering, front seatbelt pretensioners and full cloth trim.

Designed primarily as a functional, multi-purpose, all-wheel drive urban vehicle, Terios boasts high levels of passenger comfort, combining ride and handling characteristics of a passenger car with the advantage of added height associated with an all terrain wagon.

Five-speed manual or optional four speed automatic transmissions are available which drive through the constant all-wheel drive, offering safe, sure-footed driving on most road surfaces. And in the worst conditions, the driver can activate the centre differential lock for extra traction.

Terios continues to offer ample room for passengers and luggage with its multi-use seating arrangement that provides a range of seating and cargo configurations.

The rear seat’s back and cushion is divided in two equal sections that fold and recline independently.

Electric windows on front doors, central locking, rear seat head restraints, alloy wheels, roof rails and a roof spoiler with integrated brake light are standard on the SX model.

The suspension system uses MacPherson struts with lower A arms and coil springs at the front while the rear has a five-link rigid axle with coil springs. A front stabiliser comes as standard to further improve driving stability.

In the SX model rear seat head restraints come standard as does an impact sensing door lock release system that automatically disables the central locking system, unlocks the doors and activates the hazard warning and interior lights in the event of a collision.

Other safety features include front and rear crumple zones and side impact beams in each of the four side doors, a monocoque body with a built-in frame for superior torsional and flexural body strength. Side members at the front and rear of the longitudinal frame absorb impact and to further boost rigidity the A/B-pillars, and quarter pillars incorporate large reinforcements.

The base model Daihatsu Terios DX has a recommended retail price of $18,590* while the higher specification Terios SX has an RRP of $ 20,790*. *(Excluding on-road costs) Automatic transmission is available on both models at an RRP of $1,600, and Terios is covered by Daihatsu’s standard three year/60,000 km warranty.
