Production
of Crossfire concept confirmed - for Karmann
Chrysler's
announcement that it will build a production version of its Crossfire
concept vehicle is probably not that great a surpise, given the
reception the future-retro coupe has had on the show circuit.
“With head-turning design and world-class
engineering, the production version of the Chrysler Crossfire will set
the tone for the sports coupe of the future,” said Dieter Zetsche,
president and chief executive officer of Chrysler Group. “We will make sure the production version of the
Chrysler Crossfire captures the pure emotion and character of the
concept car,” said Mr Zetsche, adding that Chrysler had worked closely
with Karmann to establish a sound business case that met strict cost,
quality and asset utilisation objectives. “Karmann has earned a solid reputation for quality and
building limited volume vehicles,” he said. “This is an excellent
example of how we are able to expand our product portfolio by leveraging
existing technology, resources and relationships within DaimlerChrysler
to benefit our customers.” And the good news downunder is that Chrysler
Australia managing director, Ms Judith Wheeler, says we can expect to
see the Crossfire here. “At
this stage, the Crossfire is slated for right-hand drive production,”
said Ms Wheeler. “A classic example of Chrysler’s ‘Concept to
Reality’ philosophy and tangible proof of our capability to elevate
and broaden the Chrysler brand. “This is certainly a vehicle that we would love
to have in our dealerships. The Crossfire embodies the passion and
excitement that our company is famous for building.” Voted one of show-goers’ favourite concept cars
on this year’s motor show circuit in the USA, the Crossfire combines
American spirit and power with flair of international proportions. The
production version will give the Chrysler brand another exciting and
aspirational vehicle – joining the PT Cruiser, 300M, Viper and Prowler
– and reinforce the brand’s expressive and innovative appeal.
Karmann is located in northern Germany in the city
of Osnabrueck where it employs 7600 people who build approximately
100,000 vehicles annually. Additional company locations are in Portugal,
Brazil and the United States. Chrysler Group will announce more news about the
production version of the Crossfire at the 2002 Greater Los Angeles Auto
Show in January.
