| Audi's avant-garde A6 Avant - 1/12/97 |
Audi has unveiled the first images of its
stunning all-new A6 Avant, which will be launched in
Australia during the third quarter of next year.Following the unprecedented popularity of the recently launched and beautifully styled A6 saloon, the Audi A6 Avant is expected to continue the tradition of the last 20 years as the most successful estate car in its segment. Audi in Australia expects to launch the A6 Avant in both 2.4 and 2.8-1itre engine variants, available in both front-wheel drive and quattro all-wheel drive. The 2.8-1itre V6 engine has a peak output of 142 kW (193 bhp), while the slightly smaller 2.4 litre V6 develops 110 kW (150 bhp). Additional variants available in Europe include a four cylinder, 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, as well as 1.9-litre and 2.5-1itre TDI versions This latest addition to the Audi range combines high performance, visionary design and practical application. Its lightweight design is based on the saloon platform and the weight difference has been minimised at 50 kg. Overall vehicle length of the Audi A6 Avant remains the same as its saloon sister and the vehicle boasts a total luggage capacity of 1590 litres. The shape of the tailgate and luggage compartment has been designed thoughtfully to maximise the scope for accommodating bulky items. The width of the tailgate opening extends back along the full length of the level, virtually rectangular load area. Standard features of the streamlined new A6 Avant include a matching luggage net which corresponds to the vehicle interior; aluminium roof rails in black or bright finish; a dividing net between the luggage area and the passenger compartment; additional stowage compartments beneath the load area floor of front-wheel-drive models; split-fold rear seats (folds down to 1/3 or 2/3); and a load area cover which can be operated single-handedly. Powerful luggage area lights and an active reflector in the tailgate have been added to the constellation of interior lights available on the Audi A6 including footwell and sill lights, active reflectors on all doors, two illuminated make up mirrors, reading lights and two large-area lights at the front and rear. The A6 Avant also features automatic air-conditioning with sun position control and separate left and right-side temperature controls. Other standard features on all variants include: central locking with radio remote control, front and rear power windows, variable height front seats and head restraints, three-point automatic seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioners for all five seats, and driver and front-passenger airbags and front side airbags. Additional safety features include anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), an electronic differential lock (EDL) as an aid to traction and the ASR anti-slip traction control system on all six cylinder models with front-wheel drive. Ellipsoidal fog lights, aluminium wheels with a full-size spare, outside temperature display and electrically adjusted, heated door mirrors round off the basic specification of the Audi A6 Avant. The perfectly proportioned A6 Avant measures 1956 mm wide (excluding mirrors) and it stands 1479 mm high. Fuel consumption and performance data are almost identical to the corresponding saloon car with a similar level of equipment, and the vehicle has a low drag coefficient of cD = 0.29 with an effective frontal area of 0.64 square metres. |
