147 production boosted as demand catches Alfa by surprise

Alfa Romeo is planning to boost production of its hot new Alfa 147, following demand for the new car outstripping the Italian carmaker’s greatest expectations.

But now even that is looking conservative and Alfa Romeo has given the go ahead for production for 2001 to be raised to 120,000.

"The Alfa 147 is much hotter than Alfa Romeo planned," says Diaz Ruiz, sales and marketing director for Fiat Auto.

"Alfa Romeo has taken more than 30,000 orders for the 147 in its first month and the waiting list now stretches to more than 15 weeks, which is far to long. We believe it is possible that 147 production could have to rise to 150,000 units a year to meet demand."

Named 2001 European Car of the Year, the Alfa 147 has been acclaimed for its strong style, high performance and benchmark levels of equipment and features.

Its success comes hard on the heels of the hot selling Alfa 156. Also a European Car of the Year winner, demand for the Alfa 156 has consistently outstripped supply for all versions.
