147 five door breaks cover

Alfa Romeo has released the first pictures of the five door version of its all-new small car, the 147, which is due to arrive in Australia in 2001.

It is expected to account for the majority of 147 sales in Australia after it debuts at the 2001 Sydney International Motor Show.

Two versions have been confirmed for the Australian market. The three door will be powered by the acclaimed 2.0 litre 110 kW engine matched to the Formula One sourced - and now World Championship winning - Selespeed gearbox. This combination provides the 147 with a 208 kmh top speed and the ability to cover the 0-100 kmh dash in 9.3 seconds.

With the launch of the five door will come an all new 1.6 litre Twin Spark engine with an output of 88 kW. Its top speed will be 195 kmh and it has a 0-100 kmh time of 10.6 seconds.

Alfa Romeo has positioned the 147 as not so much a means of transport as a method of communication, such is the level of technology inside the car.

147_5dr_04.JPG (20335 bytes)It uses not one, but two computer local area networks (LAN). One high speed network connects and operates all the 147's drivetrain and safety systems and technology.

A second system provides all the driver interfaces from the speedometer to the AirCon system, as well as connecting with the outside world via the GSM telephone network and satellites to provide a remarkably wide range of services and facilities from navigation to restaurant guides and where to find a cash machine. And, because if uses voice recognition, it provides this service with maximum safety.

Both versions will continue the Alfa Romeo standard in Australia of high levels of standard equipment and highly competitive prices. Full details will be announced when the Alfa Romeo 147 goes on sale in Australia in 2001.
