June 29

Distinctively styled Vectra offers an attractive combination of interior style and comfort, high feature levels, innovative technology, advanced safety systems, optimised performance and class-leading fuel efficiency.

Fine tuned by Holden engineers to suit Australian requirements, the award-winning Vectra is sourced through Holden’s worldwide link with General Motors in Europe, where it last year topped the popularity polls as Western Europe’s best-selling medium sized car.

Vectra - with which Holden plans to claim a significant share of domestic and export markets - denotes an important new beginning for the company, as Holden will commence local manufacture of the car in 1998, following completion of a new production line at its Elizabeth (SA) manufacturing plant.

"Vectra slots perfectly into the Holden range, and represents a major opportunity for Holden to once again become a mainstream marketer odf cars in the medium segmentr," said Holden’s chairman and managing director, Jim Wiemels.

"As the spearhead of an export market push in the vast Asia-Pacific region, it will also establish Holden’s position as a major player in GM’s global aspirations. Vectra is characterised by an exceptional level of technology and innovation.

"We believe that by delivering the right blend of size, styling, practicality and performance, the Holden Vectra directly addresses the changing attitudes and requirements of buyers in this segment. It is a high-tech, value for money package with standouity aesthetic appeal," Mr Wiemels concluded.

Two body choices, two trim levels

Vectra is available in two body styles: 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback.

Buyers may choose between the GL 2 litre sedan and hatch models, or the more highly specified Vectra CD 2 lite sedan and CD 2.5 litre V6 hatchback.

Successfully blending efficient aerodynamics and expressive styling, Vectra has an independent character which stands out from its Japanese and Korean competition.

It offers a spacious interior within compact exterior dimensions for easy handling and parking, plus generous accommodation and load-carrying versatility, with 60/40 split folding rear seats and a load-through facility for transporting long objects.

A stylish body kit, sourced from European design house Irmscher and available as a factory fitted option, will further broaden Vectra’s appeal with front and rear spoilers, side sills and alloy wheels.

Comfort and Convenience

Both the GL and CD models have a comprehensive range of features that include a multi-function display of time, date and outside temperature ; a clean air filter system ; power steering with hydraulic self-centring ; tachometer ; five-position steering wheel height adjustment ; cup holders ; premium 6-speaker sound system with speed-dependent volume control ; remote control heated exterior mirrors and road speed sensitive intermittent windscreen wipers.

Vectra CD also features remote radio controls in a leather-covered steering wheel ; trip computer ; electronic cruise control ; power windows with express down and safety auto-reverse ; air conditioning and adjustable lumbar support. Automatic transmission is standard on the CD hatchback.

Safety and Security

Vectra has a rigid occupant cell that provides mamximum survival space, and it is the only car in its class to feature ABS braking and electronic traction control as standard.

A full-size 60 litre driver airbag is standard on both models, with the CD also featuring a passenger airbag as standard, and a unique brake/clutch pedal breakaway system (patented by Opel) reduces the risk of damage to drivers’ feet in a serious collision.

The security system includes remote central locking with rollong security code, a deadlock facility, electronic immobiliser, lockable rear seatbacks and PIN sound system protection.

Performance/fuel efficiency

The 2.0 litre engine used in Vectra GL sedan/hatch and the CD sedan is a twin-camshaft, 16 valve ECOTEC 4-cylinder unit producing 100kW of power.

Based on AS2877 tests, Vectra 2 litre manual returns 8.0 L/100km on city cycle and 5.4 L/100km on highway cycle, while the auto delivers 9.5 L/100 and 5.4 L/100 respectively. Holden says these figures qualify all 2 litre Vectras for the title of "most economical medium sedan and hatch in Australia".

Vectra CD hatch is equipped with a 2.5 litre quad-cam, 24 valve ECOTEC V6, optimised for premium unleaded, developing 125kW of power. It returns 10.5 L/100km on highway cycle and 6.2 L/100 on city cycle, prompting Holden to claim it as "Australia’s most economical six cylinder hatchback".

Its fuel efficiency is due in part to clever aerodynamic design, and to a world-first "neutral idle" system that shifts the auto transmission into neutral when at a standstill. It is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by up to three percent.
