| Mitsubishi Motors Australia exports to Taiwan - 24/11/97 |
| Mitsubishi has become the first
Australian car manufacturer to export vehicles to Taiwan,
representing a welcome break-through in access to an
important Asia-Pacific market. The first consignment of 51 cars left Adelaide for the Port of Keelung on November 13, and it is expected a total of around 1000 left-hand drive vehicles will be exported to Taiwan over the next 12 months. The Diamante sedan is powered by a 3.5 litre V6 engine and is distributed by Sino Diamond Motors Corporation which has its headquarters in Taipei. The Diamante will be marketed against a range of luxury marques - BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, SAAB, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura - and goes on sale from 20 December 1997. Speaking at the media launch of the car in Taipei today, Mr Rex Kelly, General Manager Export of Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited, noted that it was the first time an automobile manufactured in Australia had been presented for sale in Taiwan. He thanked the Taiwan authorities for their decision to allow the importation of Australian manufactured cars in response to representations made by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade. The total vehicle market in Taiwan in 1996 was 462,000 units and Mitsubishi achieved 16.2% market share. In 1997, October YTD, Mitsubishi has lifted its market share to 21.2% and is the leading automaker in Taiwan. |
