Lexus introduces GS300 luxury sports touring model - 16/10/97

Lexus Australia has introduced an all new model, the GS300 with a performance capability which sets it directly against the best European sports-touring models.

The Lexus GS300 is a rear wheel drive, five speed automatic, performance vehicle with benchmark technology. It has a recommended retail price of $89,500 (excluding moonroof $2,530 and spoiler $870) substantially below expectation.

The GS300 shares with the flagship LS400 a series of technological advancements which will have major flow-on effect to all cars.

The Lexus Advanced Technology released this year in LS400 and GS300 is as significant for the motor industry as twin cam multi-valve engines and ABS brakes have been in the last decade.

GS300 features include:

The introduction of sophisticated vehicle stability control for the first time into a vehicle selling for less than $100,000

Use of a world leading highly sophisticated infinitely variable valve timing system which increases torque and horsepower and decreases fuel use.

The new Lexus GS300 is the quickest naturally aspirated 3.0 litre luxury sedan in Australia. It can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.

It has the most advanced engine in its class and is the first luxury car in Australia with intelligent, infinitely variable valve timing.

The new 3.0 litre Twin Cam Multi-valve straight six also has air-assisted sequential fuel injection, an electronic throttle with snow mode, stainless steel exhaust headers, direct ignition, a knock control system and Multiplex diagnostics.

The 2997cm3 2JZ-GE engine delivers 166kW at 6000 rpm and 298Nm of torque at 4000rpm. The adoption of intelligent variable valve timing (VVTi) helps the new engine deliver 80 percent of peak torque at just 1400rpm.

The new Lexus GS300 was designed to combine optimum handling with ride quality, offering a low polar moment of inertia, a low co-efficient of yaw and high levels of mechanical grip.

Lexus designers have optimised cabin space and boot capacity by positioning the fuel tank under the rear seat and developing a highly package efficient multi-link rear suspension system for the vehicle.

The new Lexus was designed to meet the world's toughest safety crash-test standards. Design targets included meeting the 64km/h offset deformable barrier test, the 56km/h full lap front test, and European and US dynamic side impact tests.
