Excel named `Small Car of the Year' - Nov 1997
HYUNDAI'S top-selling Excel range has won a major award as "Small Car of the Year" against strong opposition in a hotly contested market.

The Excel was announced the winner of the award, sponsored by the Adelaide Advertiser, against the Daihatsu Pyzar, Toyota Starlet and Mitsubishi Mirage.

Judges said the Excel is the yardstick in the Australian small-car market and that the car is the best-seller in its segment. They also commended the Excel for its aggressive pricing and increasing reputation for economical motoring.

The judges considered their own expectations and those of the Excel's market segment.

Judging criteria were: quality and engineering, practicality, value for money, and clever design features.

The judges were Adelaide Advertiser motoring editor Bob Jennings, Royal Automobile Association chief engineer Graham Ryan and respected freelance motoring writer Peter McKay.

A commemorative trophy was presented by 1987 500cc motorcycle world champion Wayne Gardner and accepted by Hyundai's regional manager for SA Ken Durward.

Mr Durward said Excel, with more than 30,000 sales this year, was the most popular four-cylinder car in the country and the best-selling car in the private market.
