Laser cuts prices and gains airbag - 1/12/97
Ford Australia has reduced the recommended retail prices of its stylish Laser small car range by up to $1000 and added a driver’s airbag as standard equipment on all Laser models.

The volume selling LXi sedan and hatch now each list at $19,990 rrp, a sticker price reduction of $1000 but effectively a $1990 cut considering the now standard inclusion of the driver’s airbag, formerly a $990 option.

The Laser GLXi sedan and hatch sticker prices each reduce by $900 to $21,990. Again effectively this is a $1890 cut with the now standard driver’s airbag fitted.

Over LXi, the GLXi adds the higher output 1.8 litre engine, sportier suspension, rear disc brakes, driver seat tilt and height adjustment and cup holder.

Interior trim upgrades include adoption of ‘Stratos’ velour in both

GLXi Lasers (previously only in the sedan) and ‘Nimbus’ cloth in both LXi models (previously in GLXi hatch).

"We are keen to improve Laser’s competitiveness into next year", Ford’s Brand Manager—Imported Cars, Tim Schreiber said.

"Boosting Laser’s value for money on top of its already class leading styling, dynamics, quality and reliability should appeal to buyers.

"Laser sales should top 8000 this year—around 1000 more than 1996.

"We plan to increase that customer momentum in 1998 in what is now a very crowded market segment," he said.

Mr Schreiber said more than 420,000 Lasers had been sold in Australia since its introduction nearly 17 years ago.

"Our market research confirms Laser’s strong image and repeat buyers of Laser attest to its excellent reputation," he added.
