Toyota sponsors Coastcare - 30/11/97
Toyota Australia has become the first motor corporation to sponsor the Coastcare program.

The announcement was made at the start of Coastcare week, which runs from December 1-7.

Coastcare is a Commonwealth/State/Local Government program committed to protecting and repairing Australia’s coastline.

Toyota Australia’s senior manager - marketing, Peter Evans, said Coastcare typified Toyota’s attitude towards environmental issues.

Paul Lee from Toyota, tennis ace Pat Rafter, John Glen from the Young Endeavour, Bruce Scarsbrick from Coastcare and Senator Marise Payne welcome Toyota at the recent launch of Coastcare Week.

"Toyota’s commitment to the environment is both local and global," Mr Evans said.

"Toyota’s local manufacturing plant at Altona, Victoria, utilises water-borne paint equipment. This significantly reduces solvent usage and slashes emissions of volatile organic compounds, a major ingredient of smog.

Coastcare's primary role is to support community involvement in the management of coastal and marine areas.

Coastcare funds activities to help protect and rehabilitate areas such as sand dunes, estuaries and wetlands. In 1998 over 700 Coastcare groups and six corporate sponsors will help repair and manage Australia's coast.

Toyota's sponsorship will see it involved in a number of activities designed to educate people about environmental problems facing our precious coast. Toyota will work with Coastcare to raise awareness about the responsible use of four wheel drive vehicles in Australia's fragile coastal zone.
