Sales of the new Mazda MX-5 have now passed the
1000 mark, making it Australias best selling two-seat sports car as well as the
countrys top selling convertible. Mazda announced that it delivered 171 of the
hot new model in October, making it the best sales month for the vehicle since start of
initial deliveries in March.
Year-to-date sales for MX-5 have reached 1035 and there are currently more than 170 in
dealer stock being prepared for delivery in November.
Mazda Australia Managing Director, Malcolm Gough, said the new car had succeeded beyond
the companys expectations.
"We were confident of about 100 sales per month but sales in excess of 150 were
beyond our predictions," he said.
Mr Gough said the new model had appeared to open a completely new market for the MX-5.
"Less than 20 percent of sales are coming from owners of the previous model,"
he said.
"While we are cautious about suggesting that the frenzy of 1989 - when the MX-5
was first introduced - is recurring, it is showing all the signs."
"Monthly sales are growing, dealer orders remain at record levels and with summer
just around the corner, we are set to come close to the best year ever for MX-5 sales in
Australia which was 1455 sales in 1990."
