S-class wins Wheels COTY The Mercedes-Benz S-class has won the coveted Wheels Magazine Car of the Year award.
The S-class triumphed over a field of more than 30 competitive vehicles to win the trophy, following a week-long test drive over 1,000 kilometres by a team of ten experienced journalists, including automotive safety experts and engineers. It is the first time since 1981 that Mercedes-Benz has won the award. (On that occasion, the S-class was also the victor). In making the award Wheels Magazine editor, Mr Ewen Page, said "The S-class outshone its competitors on all judging points: function, technology, efficiency, safety and value." He said the S-class represented a significant step forward for its class and for all vehicles generally. "The introduction of many of its leading edge technologies will soon become commonplace in more everyday cars," he said. "Its interesting to note that the 1981 S-class Wheels Car of the Year winner introduced antilock brakes - now common even on small economy cars. "The 1999 S-class winner has a cleaner, more efficient engine; chassis stability technology and enhanced safety technology in the areas of body structure, airbag design and location. "In particular, it represents good value. Even with a price tag of $169,500 it is cheaper than its predecessor and considering its technology, quality and function, this S-class rates as very good value for money," said Page. Mercedes ran a national advertising press campaign highlighting the award. It featured the headline:- "Wheels Car of the Year Award The Wheels recognition is the highpoint in Mercedes-Benz outstanding performance in the major Australian motoring awards this year. In the major awards made by the countrys premier motoring organisations NRMA in Sydney and RACV in Melbourne, the E320 won Best Luxury Car status, while the ML320 won Best Recreational four-wheel-drive. Motoring clubs RACQ and RACT in Queensland and Tasmania also voted the E-class Best Luxury Car. The A-class also currently holds the "Most Outstanding Achievement in Automotive Safety Award" given by a major industry parts supplier. The latest awards mean that each of the major Mercedes-Benz product lines in Australia (S-class, E-class, A-class and M-class, excluding C-class) now hold industry recognition as the best in their field. |
