Minister condones Hyundai's action over Excel welding

Hyundai is adopting responsible engineering, legal and moral procedures in continuing to investigate the sub-frame issue with the Federal Office of Road Safety (FORS), company chief executive Mr C. K. Liew said today.

Mr Liew welcomed yesterday’s statement by the Minister for Transport, the Hon. John Anderson MP, which condoned Hyundai’s actions so far. The company has advertised nationally and written to owners who may be affected, advising them to contact the toll-free number 1-800 701 102.

"We agree with the Minister that we must continue to work closely with FORS to achieve an early resolution to this matter," Mr Liew said.

"Executives from Hyundai Motor Company and our own organisation will meet with FORS again this afternoon in Canberra.

"FORS is the only responsible legal authority and it has an established and well-accepted process for resolving such matters.

"There are important long-term safety reasons for Hyundai to co-operate in going through this process, which includes a proper investigation, before deciding on the course of action.

"Hyundai and its dealers are good corporate citizens who are anxious to resolve any issue that may affect our owners.

"We will continue to pursue this responsible process with FORS - despite some short-term unfavourable publicity.

"We will not be railroaded into making premature decisions that are not in the best interests of customers," Mr Liew said.
