Locally produced Vectra : powerful new engine, stylish wagon

Vectra wagon.jpg (23871 bytes)With the introduction of a more powerful Australian-built Vectra and the inclusion of a stylish, all-new Vectra wagon, Holden is set to claim an even larger market share for this popular medium-sized car.

The new Vectra sedan and wagon are manufactured to world-class standards on a multi-million dollar new production line at Holden’s manufacturing facility in Elizabeth, South Australia.

The sporty and practical Vectra GL wagon shares the classy good looks and driveability of its GL and CD sedan stablemates. All are equipped with a new 2.2 litre engine, specifically developed by Holden to offer increased power and the strong low-end torque preferred by Australian drivers. The new models also feature suspension tuning expressly for local road conditions, enhancing ride and comfort while retaining Vectra’s European handling qualities.

While Holden has plans to export the Vectra to Asia Pacific markets later this year, its Director of Sales and Marketing, Kevin Wale, says the new model will position the company to achieve the more immediate goal of becoming one of Australia’s biggest marketers of small and medium vehicles.

"Vectra continues to achieve best-ever sales results because it delivers the right mid-sized package - practicality, stand-out style, performance and a really comprehensive features list. With a new 2.2 litre twin cam 16 valve engine and the choice of a stylish wagon version, it gives buyers in this segment everything they want. Vectra is a car without compromise," he said.

"Holden Vectra was awarded the 1997 NRMA and RACV ‘best medium car’ awards based on the value it offered - and this commitment to value continues with the localisation of sedan and wagon production. Vectra pricing remains extremely competitive."

Holden now gives Vectra buyers the choice of sedan, wagon or hatchback.

The Australian-built GL and CD sedan and the GL wagon are powered by a new 2.2 litre, 4-cylinder engine produced by Holden’s Engine Operations. Vectra GL and CD hatchbacks, which continue to be fully imported, are powered by a higher-revving 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder engine and a 2.5 litre V6 respectively.

Vectra GL Wagon
Vectra wagon rear.jpg (18882 bytes)The Vectra GL wagon is described as the perfect lifestyle choice for people who don’t require a full-sized wagon, but who like the additional flexibility a wagon provides.

It shares the striking styling - surfaces highlighted by a trapezoidal grille and exterior mirrors - that characterises Vectra sedan and hatchback models. Similarly, it offers high standard feature levels, including a retractable cargo blind, integrated roof rails and underfloor storage compartments. Vectra wagon’s sedan-like ride quality is further enhanced by a 12 mm thick roof liner, specially developed to reduce interior noise levels.

A true medium sized wagon, Vectra GL has a fully carpeted load area of 460 litres, which can be increased to 1,490 litres by folding down the 60:40 split rear seats. A low boot sill makes for easy access and loading.

Engine and Transmission
The new 2.2 litre twin cam 16 valve DOHC engine developed by Holden’s Engine Operations for Vectra sedan and wagon develops 104kW of power at 5,200 rpm (up 4kW over the 2.0 litre engine) and torque of 200Nm at 4,000 rpm, a significant increase in pulling power of 8 per cent. With the introduction of balance shafts, the new engine offers improved levels of refinement over the full rpm range.

Complementing the low end torque character of the new 2.2 litre engine, the automatic transmission has been refined to provide a smoother shifting quality and to reduce the need for downshifts when hill climbing.

Manual transmission ratios of the 2.2 litre engine are also revised. A long fifth gear improves highway fuel consumption while providing improved acceleration response.

Suspension
Without compromising Vectra’s crisp European handling, Holden chassis engineers have further developed the sedan and wagon suspension to suit Australia’s unique driving conditions.

Improved ride comfort over uneven surfaces has been achieved through subtle changes to the rear spring rate, and the valving of front struts and rear shock absorbers has been revised to improve rebound control and soften impact harshness. Locally developed Bridgestone tyres complement the new suspension package.

Sound System
All Vectra models gain improved AM and FM radio performance in rural and metro areas, courtesy of a new Blaupunkt stereo electronic tune radio/cassette system, which also features larger buttons and graphics. CD models receive a single CD player with steering wheel-mounted remote controls.

Safety
Vectra’s class-leading safety system is further improved with the availability of a new generation Bosch 5.3 anti-lock braking system (ABS), which provides faster response times. Holden engineers have recalibrated the ABS-integrated traction control feature to achieve optimum performance on all types of surfaces, including gravel roads.

Passive safety equipment is upgraded with the addition of lap/sash centre rear seat belts across the range.

ABS and electronic traction control are now optional on Vectra GL sedan and wagon, and standard on Vectra CD sedan and Vectra GL and CD hatch.

Options
A European-designed, factory-fitted electric sunroof is offered as an option on Vectra GL and CD sedans and the GL wagon. It operates in two modes: tilt or slide open, and features tinted glass and a sliding sunscreen.

Vectra buyers who wish to add further individual touches can choose from a range of Vectra ‘iD Series’ body kit enhancements, factory fitted by Holden by Design. Electronic cruise control (standard on CD models) is now available on the GL sedan and wagon. A 6-stack CD player is available across the range.

Vectra GL and CD Hatch
The Vectra GL hatch retains the higher-revving 2.0 litre 16 valve DOHC engine, producing 100kW and returning fuel economy figures that make it the most fuel-efficient medium hatch in Australia.

Additional safety features include the centre rear lap/sash seat belt and padded, adjustable rear seat head restraints.

The sought-after Vectra CD hatch offers as standard the smooth and flexible 2.5 litre, quad cam 24 valve ECOTEC V6, teamed with automatic transmission, which develops 125kW of power. A Blaupunkt radio and single CD player with steering wheel remote controls complement its impressive level of standard appointments.

Vectra GL and CD sedan and wagon are available in the following colours: Heron White; Orion Silver; Tungsten (olive grey); Valencia (orange/red); Granada (red/ burgundy); Rubens Red (dark purple/red), Capricorn (deep green); Bermuda (blue).
