On 29 November, 1948, came a defining moment when Holden released
the first Australian designed and built car - the 48/215 - fondly known as the FX. (The origin of that unofficial name is a topic of
conversation in our Holden Discussion Group).
"Shes a beauty" said the then Prime Minister, Ben Chifley.
From that moment on, life would never be the same again for those who have owned and
driven five and a half million Holdens since.
A specially produced video, narrated by
Holden personality, Greg Norman, follows Holdens history up to, between and post
World Wars as portrayed in rare cinema/news film from the thirties, forties and fifties. Further insights into lifestyles of the period are explored as television
follows significant model changes through the sixties and seventies.
There is vision of Holdens exported around the world, motorsport success at Bathurst,
Around Australia Trials, and sales promotion film/TV commercials over the years.
The video includes dialogue with engineers marketers of the original Holdens, industry
experts and current owners of older, pristine Holdens.
The ninety minute program is an extension of a one hour special to be screened on the
Seven Network at 6.30pm on Sunday, 29 November - and will be on sale through Festival
Video the following day via major video stockists.
It features restored footage obtained from the National Film and Sound Archive along with
Holdens own collection and reveals in a unique way how Holden cars made it to icon
status in fifty years.
