Asia Motors Australia has welcomed the recent
announcement of the selection of Hyundai Motor Co, to purchase the Korean operations of
Asia Motors, as a firm indication of the continued strength and support of its commercial
vehicle operations and sales in Australia. The move makes Hyundai the seventh largest
automobile manufacturer in the world, with an annual capacity of 2.85 million vehicles and
the potential to control 60 per cent or more of the Korean domestic car market by February
1999 (source Korea Economic Weekly).
Commenting on the announcement Mr Ian Campbell, managing director of Asia Motors
Australia, said he welcomed the move that would have a rapid effect on the Korean economy
by restoring stability and maintaining confidence.
Asia Motors Australia imports a range of 4WD vehicles, minibuses and bus and coach
chassis to Australia and New Zealand under the Asia brand name.
Other divisions of the company include Korean Auto Parts which imports genuine
manufacturers spare parts for all Korean manufactured vehicles and Doowon air conditioning
units for bus and coach applications. A further division, Daelim Motorcycles Pty Ltd
imports a range of motor cycles and motor scooters ranging in engine capacity from
50cc-125cc.
"The future for Asia Motors Australia is particularly strong with the recent
signing of an agreement to export bus and coach products to the Czech Republic, Slovakia
and Russia direct from our Australian operation.
"Our ability to supply genuine spare parts for Korean manufactured vehicles
represents significant cost savings of up to 30 per cent for both trade and retail
customers," said Ian Campbell.
"The increasing acceptance of the Asia 18-seat Combi Bus and Cosmos 41 seat bus
and 32 seat coach chassis coupled with the release next year of the new Retona 4WD
are further justification for our enthusiasm for the months ahead," Mr Campbell
added.
