Three out of four a clean event for Stokell

LAMBORGHINI driver Paul Stokell claimed his third win today from four starts, in the Cleanevent Nations Cup at the Fosters Australian Grand Prix meeting in Melbourne.

Stokell steered his V12-engined Lamborghini Diablo GTR to an untroubled victory after taking the lead from Jim Richards (Porsche) on the third of six laps of the 5.3 km Albert Park circuit.

Richards ran home second to clinch his best result of the weekend, ahead of Geoff Morgan in a Chrysler Viper.

"This was a fantastic result for everyone in Team Lamborghini Australia,” said the Tasmanian-born Stokell.  “We went one better than last year's two AGP victories and that augurs well for the start of the 2002 Australian Nations Cup Championship in Adelaide two weekends from now.

"We came close to beating Jim to the championship last year. This was our first meeting of 2002 and now we have an idea how the new Porsche GT3 Cups and Michelotto Ferraris go against the Lamborghini, I can't wait to get to the first round."

Stokell started from pole position but lost a contest for the first corner with yesterday's race winner Ryan Briscoe, in a Ferrari 360 Michelotto.

However, under pressure from Richards the 20-year-old Briscoe hit the safety wall heavily while braking for turn six on the second lap and retired the Ferrari with both left-side wheels hanging loose.

Richards inherited the lead, but ultimately his six-cylinder Porsche could not hold off the 500 horsepower Lamborghini.
