Hi all,

Where would I be able to find the most thorough documentation concerning HQ Sandman Identification? Ive trawled a lot of posts surrounding the subject and there appears to be a lot of conflicting information surrounding the model.

HK, ive just gone back through some of my old posts and have a few questions regarding a reply you posted to detective (Q and A below) a while back regarding the HQ prototypes.

Detective
Might've this car been one of the Design Studio models in preparation for the release of the Sandman range ? .. It seems to have all the hallmarks of an upmarket model, with the colour palette and graphics possibly still to be decided....?

HK
I doubt it. I have both Sandman prototypes recorded, both December 1972 cars, both 000M dealer codes. The ute is a Kingswood in Salamanca Red, the van a Belmont but specced up to Kingswood level (like a HX Sandman) in March 17th. I have seen the van in the flesh and the ute appears on GMH sales tender documents.

1. Were the Ute and Van both built in December with the Van specced up to Kingswood level on the 17th of March 73?.

2. Would prototypes like these with a 000 Code normally need any Zone office approval or would the order be placed directly through the VOPC for use within the design studio?

3. What were the Kingswood upgrades applied to the Belmont package on the van?.

4. Was the Utility upgraded any further from the Kingswood spec?

5. What dashes were fitted to the two vehicles 120/140miles?

6. Were they Dandenong Built?

7. What Engine/Trans/Diff configurations were fitted?

8. The colour of the van? was it painted in the standard commercial colours and were they both fitted with the sandman decals?

Thx in advance

1. Both were built in December 1972 on the same day 15/12/72.

2. Don't know for sure. 000 wasn't a code, it was a blank. In an IBM 360 every field has to have a character, if none entered it was 0.

3. It was fitted with Kingswood level stuff that a HQ Kingswood Sandman ute would have got, got all Kingswood exterior plus interior trim.

4. No, it was an XX7 so was all Kingswood plus whatever extra HQ Kingswood Sandman would have got. Extras were GTS headlamp surrounds, guards and SS grille.

5. Don't know. Assume it was the same as Sandman given the Features Manual page with XX7 on it was issued October 1972.

6. Ute was. Van was as per all other Dandenong vans, only Dandenong assembly. Body was Elizabeth.

7. 308 manual ute, 308 auto van.

8. Van was March 17th. Don't know about decals, may have been painted if they were on them.

Just to clarify, March the 17th that HK is referring to is a paint colour not a date. The 17th of March is St.Patrick's day so the colour is a rich shade of Irish green.
I'd post a pic but I haven't worked out how to do that here yet.

The 12/72 van being specced up to Kingswood specification all made sense when we found it. We already knew about the ute as it appeared on a dealer tender as an XX7, and when the van turned up built really close to it as a 000M coded car in the colour it was all added up. Clearly GMH originally intended for the Sandman to be "Kingswood" based, but as there was only a Kingswood ute they had to turn the HQ van into "a Kingswood", very much like they did to HX Sandman.

Also fixed up the above post, the van was a 308 auto with the standard 2.78 rear axle that went with that combo in HQ.

The other interesting thing about them, although both the van and the ute show a warranty start date of 12/72, both remained with GMH until a much later date. The ute was offered for sale unregistered in a December 1974 Tender to all Victorian Zone dealers. The van is recorded with a far later engine in it when it left GMH, the engine number aligns with March 1974 production vehicles - this is not unusual for a vehicle that had significant use to be fitted with a new(er) engine when it left GMH's possession. What exactly both were used for is unknown at the stage, however the ute is sold as a Sandman in the Tender, and if you look at the Tender published in AMC magazine you see option codes against cars - this ute shows XX7. The normal practice for sales brochures was to use either the very early build cars or prototypes like these cars, however the HQ Sandman sales brochure car exterior images are all drawings, I reckon these two were the wrong colours and too far from the HQ 1974 palette hence not used.
