Hi , I have just purchased a 21ft caravan and was looking at getting a V8 adventra for the tow vehicle , still some reasonable ones around 180km , I see 1 had had the trans done , is this a problem ? I worked at a Holden dealer last year for a couple of years and didn't see any in for big repairs. thanks Mark.

Be careful of the vehicle's GVM and the GCM (combination). Whilst one of these can tow 2100kg, it means you'd have to keep as much load out of the van as possible to keep it below 2 tonnes.

Then the Kerb mass (car inc full tank of fuel) of a VZ LX8 is 1985kg, with a GVW of 2500kg. That means only 515kg for:

Towbar.
People.
Luggage.
Towball load.

A 2000kg van would put 200kg on your towball, so you take that and say a 50kg towbar off 515kg and you have only 265kg left for people and luggage. Not much for two people and luggage especially if you are trying to keep the van's weight down.

You'd be far better off with a VZ Cross8. These can tow 2500kg and a Payload of 743kg. They weigh less than an Adventra (1942kg Kerb) thus fuel usage would be the same or similar. And if you find the right one they came with leather trim and were well appointed inside especially VZ's. If you don't need the AWD. The odd 6.0L one turns up here and there too. Or if you don't need AWD you can get a Crewman SS as late as 2007, these can tow 2500kg too but have slightly less carrying capacity at 700kg, but also only weigh 1835kg. And the 2006 and 2007 variants have the LS2 6.0L engine.

Any of these AWD's were slugs standard too. My Cross8 was awful until I did a manifolds back exhaust (3.5" at the back), high flow cats and tune. Picked up about 25% power and torque at the wheels and dropped about 3-4L/100.

If you tow with these you need an extra cooler or you'll cook the transmission. Holden used to sell a kit, I fitted one to my VZ Cross8. Comes with a heat shield for the tailshaft centre bearing too.

I too am considering a vz cross 8. How are they driveline wise? Are spare part reasonably easy to get. Tia

I don't think they are any different to a Commodore/Calais/Statesman V8 in the same Series with regards to driveline reliability. The Cross8 uses a 4L65E transmission, and the diff is stronger if I remember correctly. Just the normal stuff to worry about, like shocks, rotors, front suspension rubbers, power steering pump, fuel pump etc. Make sure what you buy has had decent servicing and get transmission checked as these do need an aux cooler if you want to tow a decent load. VZ Cross 8 got the revised LS1 (with two plastic engine covers), also the VYII update at VZ release may have as well as Cross 8 didn't update to VZ at the same time as the passenger cars.

Most parts are similar to the rest of the range. These is some unique stuff but there are plenty of cars still around, and a lot of the unique bits are the same as Cros6 and Adventra.
