HJ to HZ. Hard to get nowadays, probably easier to fit Vintage Air setup.

I really need to hunt down the right thing if I can. If the only option is vintage air I'd go without

Like HK says hard to get...There a few on gumtree for sale...Mate they would be passed it and probably more trouble than worth trying to hold gas ect.

For one of my WB's I stuck a concealed under dash unit in like this set up on eBay...Works extremely well and very clean look under the bonnet.
You may need pulley and compressor bracket.

https://www.ebay.com.au/...413544a3a:g:PXkAAOSwAC1Z~O3Y&rmvSB=true

The four outlets are ducked up into the face level vents.

Griffo what are you using under the bonnet? Do you have the correct compressor , cooler and dryer etc?
That unit looks like a nice option.

It uses the Sanden (Sankyo) compressor a less HP sucking one than the original Harrison A/C type. This in a WB ute.

The Old Holden ones used these HP suckers Harrison A/C's.This is in WB Stato

Get in touch with Vintage air Auto Are Australia...ol mate....Tell them what you want and they will send you everything including the hoses...You can install it if you want just get a A/C guy to vac it and gas the unit.

E-mail - [email protected]

Phone - 07 3497 9432

I am not sure if they supply the compressor bracket or the pulley but here are eBay listings for them...This is brackets too expensive imho...more like a $70 item.....I have a spare if I can ever find it...lol.
Don't get the commodore pull as it lines up wrong.

I'm about to embark on fitting a Vintage air unit in my HK GTS. I plan to run a full serpentine pulley setup as it will have steer as well.

Like this, not the main picture, the one down on the left:

How do you fit that hidden unit under the dash? Looks like it would take up a lot of room?

Was air an option on HK Monaro Byron?
I was wandering Ballarat swap and noticed there was a fair bit of HQ-WB aircon stuff but I didn't have a clue what was right or wrong so left it. I need to be more clued up for the next swap

Hi wbute....It is noticeable and mine had a cover that blended in to the rest of the dash...I'll take some pics later and post so you can see.It tucks up under the dash out of the way in the centre.

Crusty....I'd be careful buying those old units as most hoses and connections were never taped up and stored for years, plus when you regas them you will be forever chasing leaks....The bloody A/C guys charge like wounded bulls every time you stick your head in the door....I persevered with the Stato for the original look ,It drove me to drinkApplause and I sucide tendencies Angry ....LOL

Yes it was, see here. Ugly as and you can't run a console with tacho:
http://oldholden.com/ohfiles/IMG_3852.jpg

Have a read here:
https://www.streetmachin...it-in-your-car-tech-talk

Have a look at Brad's HJ Premier on this page attached of his build thread. You can hardly see the evaporator:
https://www.aussiev8.com...75-my-hj-premier-56.html

If you Google well you can find where rather than weld up the original heater mount like Brad has you can re-purpose the airbox, Google "Vintage Air HZ Holden", second image.

Vintage air sell some really nice controls. I plan to use one of them in place of the factory HK heater controls:
http://www.srbymichael.c...1199/mode=prod/prd31.htm

I plan to use Belmont firewall blanks that go where the HK heater box goes, use the top one for a cold air intake for the engine and the lower to mount one of these for gas and hot water:

I have a hj 5 litre with factory ac and running that huge Harrison compressor and have enquired about regassing the system wih the 134A, system currently has no gas.
Will a Sanden type compressor use the same mounting bracket as the original Harrison compressor, can it be modified or is a different mounting bracket required.
Is there any particular model Sanden compressor needed for the conversion.
I’m not particularly concerned about originality just a more efficient and reliable system.

Thanks
Rob

Holden actually fitted the Sanden standard to late WB. It’s similar if not the same as VK Commodore.I have converted mine from the big Delco unit to a Sanden. The mounts are completely different. The compressor sits on top of the engine. It’s actually miles better to work on. It didn’t run the AC as well though. It’s currently not working as it got regassed with that propane mix gas and then froze up and wrecked the compressor.
I pulled a system out of a WB Statesman and retro fitted it to my WB Ute. I would do it again unless that new underdash system can be fitted without too much modification.
Fitting the standard Holden system is a big job. Dash needs to be completely removed, converted from cable control to vacuum. The evaporater unit is far from easy to fit with the engine in. Even drilling the hole through the middle of the fire wall for the vacuum hoses is not easy.
Then you find after a few months that one of the vacuum modules for the vents has died, you then get to pull it all back out to replace it. Or if you have a cam that doesn’t make much vacuum, every time you give it a boot full, you lose vacuum and all the face vents close and send all the air to your feet.

Hi old Holden...On the Ute I just used the old Harrison mount and had to cut a cpl of flat steel piece, drill a few holes and it married up...I'll post some pics.

This is the unit I want to use. If you click on "more info" it brings up a picture and CAD drawings with dimensions.

https://www.vintageair.c...lder-series/?subcat1=Gen II Compac

You can get dummy 'glass units to dummy fit and make up all your brackets. Then the unit goes in easy.

The Mini unit is a few inches smaller again.

In a Holden the fan will sit over basically behind and to the left of the radio. The two vents pointing downwards do the passenger's floor. The two smaller ones at the top you plumb to the windscreen vents (blank one if onely using one). The three bigger ones go to your face level outlets. On the HK I will blank two of the three big ones and one small one. One small one to the windscreen, one big one across to driver's side feet and have the passenger's feet done by the unit. A HK has no face level vents like a HQ-WB. If you could plumb it through the centre console you may get a small duct to the rear seats and out the ashtray hole. You can buy a diverter duct for the bottom too that sends the air across from the bottom to the other side. Another option for a HK for a dash vent is to use the "Gen II 4 Knob Under Dash Pod With Louver" on the 4th row down on the above link, it would fit directly between the tacho and the ashtray and give you one outlet plus controls.

Ok Fellas...here a cpl of the original compressor bracket with mods..

View of looking down from the passenger seat with no cutting of the glove box...But if I remember we had to cut away some of the original heater floor direction stuff in the centre...also there is a cigarette packet storage pocket in the cover/cowl on the drivers side we had cut and fill in.

I have removed the ashtray cover for you to see the unit.

Plumbing to the cabin.

This a cover for the inside unit....It rubbed on the fans so I removed it...Its not needed really as you have to look hard to see it.

This not a difficult install...If i remember the hardest part was getting the bloody ducting in to the face level vents and getting it to stay there...LOL.

Oh yeah,,,The control knob is located where the choke used to go,,,,But of course was blanked off in the WB's....Its a two way just like a radio knob ...on/off.inner tone like set up if you know what I mean.

Looks neat but I could live with punching holes in the floor for the drain pipes having to mount the fan/thermostat switch in the dash. No doubt it works well though.

Looks like a fairly simple changeover.
Should make a spark plug change a bit easier as well.

If you rounded off the ends on the new strap at the rear, one would be hard pressed to tell the difference from a factory fitment.
It's neater than some of the aftermarket brackets used in the 80s. Nice job inside too.
Cheers,

Mick

Thx mick...Of course you are right about rounding off the straps...We were always going to do that and of course once it went on it never got done...:(

The drain holes could have been higher up and the drain tubes cut to suit.. but we went with the instructions out of the box...Hindsight has 20x20 as they say.

Btw ...The cold air that comes out these has frozen up and needed turning down, its a foggy stream that you can see, the middle two vents mainly.thats in the sub tropics of course.....Plus fantastic air flow.
