Although I don't think it matters, auto or manual? Monaro, or GTS?

As far as I am aware both are black, although originally possibly the springs not very well covered in paint! Wayne (Rigpig) may have photos of what came out of his car.

Ok thanks . Do you also no what the steer box number should be for an early hk monaro . When I pulled it apart we just placed the steering box with 3 others . So not sure of the correct one for the car

I've spoke on here before about the car so it number 56 from pagewood and engine 424 of 307 . What info do you need that will best help hk1837 tell me the correct steering box

I can’t recall exactly, seen too much ID over the years!
So it is 80337 56-H5? Or 80737 56-H5? Makes a huge difference.
You mean engine is 30710424?

If it is a 337 and it has a standard type steering box i’d expect something like xE8 or thereabouts, if it had power steer or the optional 16.5:1 box then possibly xB8 or xC8 or so.
If it is a 737 then it’ll most likely be an xG8.

If it had standard steering then a box close to its build timeframe as there would be many 1000’s of these used every few weeks. Unless all your 3 boxes are from the time period it should be obvious which one belongs to the car.

I reckon the shockers were a gloss black similar to warrigal and painted by the supplier not GMH.
The upper mounting brackets for the rear shocks had the same gloss black paint on them, they were probably pre-installed on the rear shocks and supplied as assemblies.

Front springs are a long story and I can only go by what I found on my Dandenong car.
The main body of the crossmember and the upper and lower control arms were painted individually.
When the crossmember was built the coil springs were installed unpainted as were the spindles and steering arms, rotors and calipers, tie rod ends, ball joints etc.
Once the crossmember assembly was completed (and prior to be installed in the car) all unpainted surfaces were sprayed black.
That includes the lower two or three exposed coils of the front springs.

If you want to be really accurate paint everything, I found factory black paint on every surface of my front crossmember including the rubbers and grease nipples.

Thanks for the info . My dad work for a Gm dealer in the 70 and he had a feeling that the springs where different colours for different motors . But that may have been on later models .

Gday. My 327 is black with a red stripe about an inch wide (That width would depend on which paintbrush they had from stores on the day)
down the whole spring. I reckon that was coding different springs. I have seen that on other 327s both restored and not. Wayne...whaddyareckon?

Yep mine had an orange slash of paint down the length of each spring

Yep...come to think of it I think it IS orange. I wonder if there could have been slight variation in that colour from plant to plant...mine=Acacia Ridge. Another interesting car is the only known black327 which I think is red? ?? I must try to find a pic of the springs in that car. It was Pagewood from memory.

Mine had red paint under the orange, it looked like red oxide to me but I'm not sure.

My springs had an orange brush mark the length of the spring. The springs looked like they were raw steel no sign of paint.[img]null[/img] My car is an Adelaide built car.

I'm with Camaro TT400 on the no other paint/bare spring. unless it had a production line marking all the springs I've seen are bare. I've got a set of springs from a brougham that has a part no. in the moulding of the steel. Have the ones you guy's have any numbers on the bottom?

On my Pagewood 1837 the springs which are out of the car at the moment,has that number 7449997, already mentioned,There is not much black but certanly has the orange stripe down the length of the spring. That number 7449997 seems to have 1st appeared in the 327 supplementary parts catalogue. Some one here may be able to give a rough idea of this cars build date. With the main X member on my 1837 has an assembly number of 2805250 and the outrigger number 11 H 8.

I believe the 7449997 first appears in the Yellow HK parts catalogue, M36640. It is 720 pounds per inch, the highest rate factory front spring for HKTG and is used in all HK, HT and HG manual 81837 cars, as well a few others.

I'd say your Pagewood car was built somewhere between 2 days and 4 weeks after 11 August 1968. The Pagewood HK81837 build sequence is fairly well known, so if you provide some tag numbers the date can be estimated more accurately. I'd be interested, as I've just built a car quite close to that date for a customer.

That the spring with part number 7449997 does appear in the Yellow Book but you might find that, in the introduction of parts catalogue M36567 that parts listed in the catalogue, M36567 which is a supplement to M35966, are parts peculiar in their application to or first introduced with the Monaro GTS 327 Coupe. You may interpret that different to me but but have a read yourself and see what you reckon.
