There is a genuine HT GTS350 for sale in NZ at the moment. The issue I have is the rivets holding the body tags on are pop rivets even though they state the car is in original unrestored condition. On top of that they say the motor has been reconditioned in the past, the motor was decked at the time and therefore the block number is no longer visible but they are saying it is a matching numbers car ... what do you guys reckon????

Over the years people have removed tags to restore cars, but if it is unrestored then i'd be suspicious. If you get photos of the tags and the chassis number off the firewall it may be something obvious.
There aren't many HT GTS350 manuals left anymore with their original engine numbers. The release was delayed due to issues with the engines requiring rebuilding, which was done for GMH by Repco, and they stuffed it up. So most were rebuilt within 5 years and the blocks were normally decked in the process. So it may well be the original engine for the tags. Or it may not be. Checking the casting number and date and that it is a Tonawanda block. |

With the dollars involved these days there are plenty of fakes, so you're right to be sceptical.
In my opinion there's no such thing as a "matching numbers" HT GTS 350M, in as much as the firewall number, VIN, body number on the tag and engine number are all independently derived and do not reference each other.
There are other ways to support claims of authenticity, such as from production sequence numbers and, as Byron said, posting the numbers here is a good start.
A genuine HT350M has dozens of differences to all other HT Monaros, some obvious and some not so obvious, so a detailed examination of the car can also uncover the truth.

Thanks guys for the interesting comments. Fair call regarding the motor, at least it means there is a reasonable chance it is the matching block rather than straight out sounding non-legit. Will post a couple of photos of the body tags for your interest ...

Looks like a mid to late September Melbourne car. Nice colour combination too. The numbers make sense to me. It would be interesting to know what the engine number used to be. I'm guessing somewhere around 350M4720x.

Do you have the number off the firewall? The 9 in the 1190 paint code has been overstamped, probably a body plant error. |

It's probably worth mentioning that the panel these tags on this "unrestored" car are pop riveted to, above the plenum, should be Warrigal Black, and not body colour.
Is there an ad for this car somewhere we can view?

Thanks to Wayne for sorting the photos out, sorry for being a newbie and such a novice! Can you also read the Q&A section o'k?? I have asked questions regarding the tags having been removed previously but it didn't go down so well and now they have left my second attempt question unanswered ... whether this is because they don't want it to put potential purchasers off I really don't know. For sure it could all be totally legit but could pick out a couple of small anomalies on viewing the photos. Be interested in what you guys think ....

There is a reluctance to answer too many questions. It would be interesting to quiz the owner on the phone number provided....
There's paint in all the wrong places, a few (alright, a lot of) mysteries in the engine bay but not too much overtly wrong. The front fender badges are on the slantendicular, pointing to a fender replacement somewhere in its life.
Maybe, as detective speculated, some extensive body work has taken place.

I tend to agree on all accounts. Am tempted to phone the owner but only out of curiosity's sake (or arguments sake haha) as in reality, I will not be partaking in the bidding war at the end, lol. Will watch with interest though...
