The VB Commodore's got the pre-coated steel for extra rust protection.

The commodores did not rust as bad as the Kingswood apart from the windscreen.

I think that the HZ was better for rust than the HQ-J-X as well.
I think that the EJ to HG were the biggest rust buckets Holden ever made, I don't know about the FX to EK if they were as bad.
I have never seen a rust bucket Commodore.

The Falcons were good but for the XA to XC being the worst total rust buckets of all and the XD on are better but not as good as the commodores from what I have seen.

When you buy a new car they will try to sell a rust proof package, when I bought my Commodore I said f off it's a commodore they don't rust and I had river sand in the back of my VY ute every week and it never had a spot of rust in 12 years I had it, but with a Falcons I would rust proof them for sure as my XG ute I had for 2 years and seen it at 4 years had rust coming out of it.

What do others think of other cars that should be rust proofed or not.

A brother has a 4x4 Great Wall ute and takes it over Fraser island every year and it has no rust 2014 I think or about when the first diesel's came out.

Plenty of rusty Commodores around....VB-VL are just as bad as HQ-WB, if not worse, and even VN-VP in the boot if the tail light seals are leaking.
The only ones I would say they really got right was from VE onwards, but VT-VZ weren't too bad - I've still seen some rusty examples, but nowhere near the level of rust we used to see.

About half the VB-VL Commodores I wrecked out in the 90s/00s were terminally rusted in structural areas like the sills, rails, corners of the scuttle, bottoms of the A-pillars or extensively rusted under the rear screen & in the boot floor. Some even had those little plastic plugs from where after-sales rustproofing had been done, but obviously wasn't all that effective. Some of the crashed ones I bought & wrecked were in remarkably good condition though - either being well looked after, or they'd had gallons of no-odour fishoil in every cavity early in their life. The ones that have survived to this day have led pampered lives, lived in a very dry area, or are like Grandpa's axe with replacement metal.

Keeping it in a dry, well ventilated garage would be more important, and successful than rustproofing it & leaving it in the weather.
Cheers,

Mick

I drive through a lot of cow shit but I do hose it off under their and drive through a lot of creek crossings and cutting loose on dirt roads a lot, but the ute was garaged and well vent. not a spot of rust and the exhaust was fine but for all the dints in it caused by some of the rocks washed across in them bloody deep creeks at times. years ago a exhaust did not last much more than 3 to 5 years max.

But just by looking at cars around on the roads and I do take note I never see rust in the commodores. Back in the 70's 80's 90's in QLD boy were there some real rust buckets getting around and when the rust was cut out the idiots just bashed it in and used bog and news paper and chicken wire. seen it all the time at the bog repair shops, NSW and NT at least could not just bog things up like the fools did in QLD.

I remember seeing new XC Falcons with fine rust starting to appear and also on the last years of the Falcons.

I was thinking of what they did to the prevention of rust as the VB came out with claims of pre-coated steel ? pre-coated zinc where it prone to rust, dip primers waxes protective lacquers and acid resisting enamels.

My mums HR bought new was Roo Ted with rust at 10 years old a hole in the passenger side rear floor big enough to toss a piccaninny through, so the dude when I sold it to in Aug 1977 said and he pulled the engine and box and diff out and got tossed out on the artificial reef.
My brother drove his HQ on the beach a fair bit cutting loose on the salt pan and going way out far on the low tide, but it never had any rust at all at 8 years old and had it for 5 years.

The Commodores have lasted better than most cars of their era. Go back ten years, or even twenty. You'd see XDs with visible hole in the rockers, while the first generation Commodores have lasted pretty well. My neighbor has a VK. Some rust around the screens, but the rockers and door bottoms are fine.

I don't know what they did to the Commodores, but they reisted rust better than their predecessors. I think the HQs- WB have held up better than the previous models.
They don't have the subframe rust issues earlier, and getting rid of the floor pivoting accelerator pedal helped the drivers floor too. They have their own issues, granted.
I just wish GM-H had spend the extra **** all and used Tectyl more.
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

HQ-WB are miles worse than HK-HG for rust in doors and plenum. As above HK-HG get subframe rust but HQ-WB crack badly which is probably worse.

The sad sad sad thing I reckon, is all the remaining rust free country HQ-WB being "saved" by a coast dwelling restorers. They will rust out just like all the others on the coast in the past. I guess it's not just HQ-WB but all old cars.
Looking at the amount of Sandmans being discovered in the country and being relocated to the coast is criminal.

My HJ Premier has lived near the coast all its 43 years and 108,000kM. No rust ever. Answer is a garage and proper rust proofing.

My HX Sandman XX7 5.0L p van was always on the coast and parked out doors one street back off the beach as was the owner before and rust was good but for both the panels just in front of the windscreen, but I could not stop that rusting so I gave the van to my Dad and then the rust started coming out everywhere, with over 850.000KM up on it and a bit of cracking of the chassis around near the front as they do and it once had the big wide part that runs under the engine bent back up a bit as they can bend inwards over time so the wheel alignment dude claimed needed to be done, she had a bulbar on it as well.

If it did not rust in them panels I would still own it now I am sure, as them p vans can sure come in handy at times when traveling about and you can get pissed where ever and don't have to drive and just go sleep in the back.

I used old engine oil as rust proof every so often and I believe that polishing the paint work must be a good thing once a year. not to mention cleaning out the drain holes in the doors as so much dirt gets in there when you drive dirt roads a lot.
