Can someone school me on why my steering bump stops have round bar welded onto them? It was done after paint but still I doubt the original owner (the fisherman) would have bother doing it. Theres some bolt-on stops available on eBay but I dont want to go cutting off what might be original.  Why are they there anyway? Wayne |

Steering stops are generally to stop you turning the wheels in too far that they might end up fouling the tyres on something (suspension or body) causing a lockup, or piercing of the sidewall.
If they've been added to, then I'd suggest someone has put wider wheels on in a past life, and had clearance issues at, or near, full lock. |

AFAIK there were extra factory steering stops added for HK/HT/HG with power steering &/or 7.35 tyres or 6" rims.

Lower control arm stops. They are part number 2809726, and for all cars except those with 6.95x14 tyres.
Having said that, I've seen quite a few cars that don't have them fitted, and would not have had 6.95x14 tyres originally.

So the welded on bit of 5/16" round on my lower control arms is more than likely a factory addition to HK GTS's with 6" rims, maybe T/G had the bolt ons?
What is part number 2809726 is that the bolt on stop? |

Yes, that's the bolt on stop. I should have looked at both pictures and not just the first one. Welding anything to a lower control arm isn't a particularly good idea so no, I don't think the factory came up with the idea featured in the second photo. This is a photo of the r.h. side wishbone on my car, l.h. side is the same.I will try and post a few more photos when I remember the way to do multiple photos

Wayne, this is an Acacia Ridge car. I've owned it since late 1975, so not sure what was done from 69 till then but looks neat and uniform on both sides (factory done?) Gerard

Ok so apparently the original 'stops' 7448587 were welded onto the lower control arm and then later in HK (at some unknown time before March 69) they were superseded by the bolt on 'stops' 2809726 The'S' in front of 7448587 means it was superseded. They are on a this early Sept. build pagewood 1837.
As mentioned earlier. I think you will find the welded on ones are a minor modification to the standard HK lower control arm to accommodate 6 inch wheels. Hold an early one and late one together you"ll find other variations in the HK lower control arms too.

OK, my HT original front end had one of the lower control arms with that bit of bar welded to it. I thought it was dodgy but there you go. The other arm does not have it. Just checked the other front end and it is the same. HT stamped on the lower control arms with only one side 'fitted' with the welded rod. The first type HK327 I have here also has the single bar welded to the lower control arms.
