It is not a Holden or any other GMH carby. The only 7043 carbs that GMH fitted to a vehicle were 7043283 (man) and 7043284 (auto). These were the clean air (ADR27) carbs fitted to HQ, LH and HJ prior to January 1974 when the canister carby 7045281 was fitted. These carbs were also fitted to export HJ, HX, HZ, LH and LX after January 1975.

I didn't think that number 7043920 is actually a Quadrajet number. Where it has the 9 is normally only a 2 or a 3, 2 means Quadrajet, 5 means California strangled Quadrajet.

The number that means GMH is the 8 (later 9) in 7043283.

Ok , thanks for that . now did a 350 HQ have a Holden code (8) or a Chev code (2) on the Quadrajet ? does anyone know the correct code for a 73 HQ 350 Auto carb? Thanks Mark.

When in 1973?

The bulk of HQ 350 were made in (Calendar years) 1971 and 1972 and into 1973 and these have GMH coded carbs - they are essentially just the 1971 version of the 1969 HT-HG GTS350 carbs so instead of 7029283/4 they are 7041283/4. These carbs are identical to their US Chevrolet versions 7029201/2 and 7041201/2 but we already had 1 and 2 for 308 M/A so GMH used 3 and 4 on the end instead. For the clean air (ADR27) 350 engine introduced around 8-9/73 the Chevrolet version of this same carby was used, which is the 1972 US L48 carby 7042202, there was no manual version as the last manual 350 was made prior to this time. The problem though is lots of these you see come up for sale in the USA are Carter made Quadrajets, the stamping is upside down and they say made by Carter on the side, plus date codes are different. Same carby though. See attached.

Here is one in Australia, don't know if it's a GMH one or not:

You may even find that all or most 1972 L48 0 coded Quaddies are made by Carter and that the only place you'll find a Rochester made one is here. The GMH ones all appear to be made in 1973 model year and by that time the L48 carby in the US was 7043201/2 and are a different spec, but Rochester still made the 1972 spec carby for Australia.

2683?

It may have been a spare part carby?

It is a manual carb too so won't work properly on an auto.

Here is an article which may be of use in identifying quadrajet carbies. It is American so may not be fully applicable to Holdens but it may provide some info.

You have to be careful of US decoding as they are unaware of GMH stuff and the auto-manual thing is only applicable to pre-canister cars, which for us is only up to 12/74. Not sure when canisters came into US cars but it'll probably be well before us?
