Hi All,
I have just bought a VT series 2 donor car.

The guy that I bought it off said that it held first gear for ages then changed up directly into third missing 2nd altogether.

Doing a quick read uncovers that this is not an uncommon problem and is often caused by a sticky TV valve.

Question 1 could it be the TV valve causing the trans to hold first until enough speed is gathered to simply select third as opposed to not having second gear?

If so will a valve body out of a V6 VT fit into the V8 VT box?

There does not seem to be a TV cable so I presume it's all activated electronically on the VT?

I'm not able to take the car for a good drive to diagnose because it has no radiator. I may have to make one fit to diagnose as the car is still registered for another month and seeing if second gear works if selected manually would be a big help in diagnosing it.

Thanks Jim.

Could be a faulty shift solenoid, however I've found this will trigger the Check Powertrain warning light

Only the VN-VQ-VP had the TV cable. From VR they went electronic, and the cable was no longer needed.

It will be a solenoid. You should be able to simply swap out the faulty solenoid pack (or swap it for another known good solenoid).

Don't just swap the valve bodies - changes were made to how line pressure is controlled, and the valve body needs to match the PCM from the era.
Cheers,

Mick

Thanks guys.

Once I saw no TV cable I deduced that anything VR onwards would not have one but thought that they would still have an electronically operated TV valve (or is that T valve?)

I'll have a look at the dash lights but so far I have only driven the car onto and then off the car trailer while sitting on the floor (no seats) in 35 degree heat without the ability to wind windows down due to no switches so I was not hanging around in there for long. Also did not want to run it for more than about 30 seconds due to no radiator.

I have sourced a crappy drivers seat from a wreck for it and I'll have a go at making a radiator fit so I can take it for a test drive and see if it will manually select second. I have to do this quickly as it runs out of rego on Boxing day.

I can get a V6 VT auto box for $50 so I might rat it's valve body. Would a VT1 V6 box's valve body work in a V8 VT2 box or does it have to be a vt2 valve body?

Just swap the actual shift solenoids over. They will swap without consequence (or hassles).
You'll see them on the valve body.

Here's some help for you to understand them: https://www.google.com.a...s&tbm=isch&tbo=u
Cheers,

Yep might just do that. It is relatively simple I know. I put an uprated pressure solenoid in my Fords box set at "tow" stage. Really glad I did not go to "performance" stage as tow stage is stif enough that it finished off my rear diff mounting bush in a couple of weeks.

I guess changing the solenoids won't fix a sticky valve though but well worth a try first.

OK I went out and bought a radiator and a pair of front seats so that I could drive it properly.

The good news is that I does indeed have all four forward gears but it is erratic and does like to hold first gear when you don't really want that.

I have rego until the end of today to see if I have fixed it but it started pissing down rain here as soon as I pulled my tools out. I have nowhere under cover to work so I'm not overly happy about that.

Anyway weather aside I have the pan off the parts tranny and there are two cylindrical solenoids up the front near the bell housing and two squarer ones at the back plus the line pressure solenoid in the middle.which ones do I change? I also cannot see any way to remove those front solenoids.

Thanks Jim.

I found the somewhat hidden clips and removed the 4 solenoids. Car is up on ramps and I'll see how the rain is after lunch.

Got the job done but unfortunately the solenoids were not the problem.

It will change into second gear but even light throttle load will have it back in first. So you cannot put any load on the transmission when it is in second gear.

the shift solenoids 1-2 . 2-3 are at the back of the box.

the two solenoids at the front of the box , one is The TCC solenoid, which often fails and puts the car into limp mode.
I cant remember what the other one is ATM.

when I do service changes on these boxes I spray with a straw nozzle, carby / throttle body cleaner into the valve body and get someone to change gears back and forth while I spray to make sure they are clean and aren't gunked up.
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.
