I have a vibration at 140 to 160km/h on the old VY SS ute. I had look at it and all looks good. she has done 210,000km. do you think it could be the rubber that is flogging out on one of both ends of the shaft or mid joint. the rubber ends looks good to me.

My VY SS ute has a vibration at 70 to 90 kays in fifth gear (use to be 80-110 with 3.46 gears). I noticed the centre bearing rubber collapsed; I replaced it and didn't make the slightest difference. I'm still looking....

From what I have been told there is many different types of holden center joint bearings some are VC and mine should be a uni I think the VY are and there are problems with just grabbing a uni and fitting it as the central spline can be twisted a bit and rusted.
So I am on the lookout to get it all reconed.
It's about $280 for the center and about $1250 for a new shaft.

I was surprised to see a Uni-joint in the centre of the tailshaft, considering every 1st and 2nd Generation Commodores used a CV joint.

Also too... mine vibrations under load..If I take my foot off it stops.

It was the rear tyre that was the problem.
The tail shaft can have the center bearing done but always can be done due to the spline getting twisted on some of the V8's.and if the universal is gone you just toss the whole thing away and have to buy a new one, the holden one is $ 1200 plus fitting.

That's good you found the problem without considerable expense or time.

So far I've replaced back tyres, wheels rotated and diff replaced (rebuilt with 4.11s) and it hasn't changed or became worse.

So far the culprit could be:

-Gearbox mount sagged, but wasn't split or moved around
-Someone recommend the harmonic balancer
-The tailshaft needs to be re-balanced

I had the diff bolts go loose where they mount up to the frame, have a look there, as mine was just about to fall out.

My motor was smoother when I replaced the water pump, no big deal but it was that I noticed it was smoother.

I still have the problem. After a service I did a visual check and noticed the centre bearing rubber has perished. I still remember replacing it 3 years ago with an aftermarket bearing...even a new A/F bearing, the rubber sagged....Maybe I should replace the centre bearing with a Genuine part...shouldn't sag and may last longer? Shame on you

Check for loose harmonic balancer. I started at the diff looking for a vibration problem. Ha! typical.
it displays the same symptoms.
