Just write back to Gerald and say that you have a relative nearby and ask what would be a convenient time to pay him a visit?

wanted me to send 256 u/k pound
worked out to be over $500 for stub axles????

Hi,

I have a set of lj/lj torana stubaxles for sale.I do not have pics of it but its in a good shape and condition and mint says it all.I would be asking a 230GBP for it including postage cost.

I would be shipping via Ups or FedEx which ever you prefer and would accept payment via Western union or Money gram.Whats your shipping address?

Here is another scam that is similar to but not the same as anything that I have seen before. The scammers emails are in itallic.

I tried not to offend as the "purchaser" may have been legit but I strongly doubt it.
"I will like to make an offer of $750 for this, pls let me know if you accept my offer, payment will be through paypal and the pick up will be arranged.

Hello Chris,
Why would you want to offer me more than I am asking? That and the Gmail account makes me a little suspicious.
Regards, Jim...
Thanks for the mail..the offered price was not a typo..i offered you more than the asking price due to other potential buyer.I am a sailor and do not have much time around me...I would have call you on phone but due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it.With the issue of inspecting and the pick up will be done by my agent..Dont worry about the pick up,my shipping agent will be coming to pick it up.Ill like you to send me your address so that my shipping agent can figure it out and come for the pick up and other necessary things....more so,send me your PayPal details(PayPal email) so i can pay in.
Note:If you dont have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com.au and get it set up , after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through.Pls advice.

Hello Chris,
OK you have my PayPal account email. The engine and gearbox are at a friends place in Queanbeyan NSW 2620 and the radiator and diff are still at my place in Carwoola NSW 2620. That should be enough for your agent. Ill take all of the stuff to the same place for pickup purposes.

However the goods wont be leaving until the money has cleared PayPal and gone into my bank account which can take a couple of days.

Thanks & regards, Jim..
I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,I got an email from my agent...he said he wont come for the pick up unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule suitable a pick up date and time and my pick up agent Headquarters is in the United Kingdom and all commission payments made for pick up from anywhere in the world is sent to their Headquarters in the Uk and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online (www.westernunion.com) but it requires a credit card to make the transfer online which i dont have access to and there is no post office on sea.(there is usually a western union section in most post offices).
So now i will include the $950 they charged to pick it up and take it home(1st class treatment)to the payments i will send through paypal. After receiving the confirmation email from PayPal after i have made the payments, i will need you to help me send the $950 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer. The western union money transfer can be made at a post office or online at www.westernunion.com.I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as am done.

Sorry I refuse point blank to use western union. Its all too hard so we are unable to do business sorry.

Regards, Jim...."

I had a similar brush with a scammer years ago known as the "secretary mistake" scam but it was not the same as this sailors scam.

The secretary mistake scam came supposedly from the UK where someone wanted to buy my VL for $400 and ship it to the UK (as if it was worth exporting a $400 Commodore).

Anyway they offered to send me a bank cheque. Knowing that it was a scam I played dumb and said yes because at least it would cost the scammer postage on the cheque.

Well his secretary made a mistake and sent me a $4000 cheque so could I please send them the extra $3600 back via Western Union once the cheque had arrived?

I strung this lowlife on for weeks saying that sorry no cheque has arrived (a fake cheque had arrived from Ireland but I was not lying as no cheque had arrived).

Eventually I emailed him a photo of the car and told him that if he prints it it would be worth more than the fake cheque as there would be more ink and paper in it. The photo was accompanied by a nice email telling the scammer to go away (well not in those words).

Hi
Anton is right. It is most likely Nigerian.......No legal treaties with OZ I believe.Their usual patterns (methods)are:
They usually say they are in the UK or some other trusted Western country.

They usually use Hotmail, Yahoo or similar email accounts.
Sometimes ( if they provide one) the country ISD phone code is different to where they claim to be.

If you are aware of international timezones then you would understand that it is strange that they might be sending emails at odd hours for where they are supposed to be.

Command of English is usually good but sometimes they get phrasing back to front or mixed up.

If they pose a a seller they do a little bit of research on popular makes and models. If they work out what are the highly desireable, collectable cars then they will offer bits to suit them too. Sometimes they dont quite get the description of the part or the Vehicle it suits right. People are more likely to drop their guard when they are blinded by the "Geniune Bathurst HK Tacho" offered for a hundred bucks....Although they may seem ok with Paypal they will end up insisting on a direct deposit or Western Union. You pay the goods do nmot turn up. You send an email and it bounces back to you because it has been closed or if they get it they ignore it..... Goodbye money.

They use a traditional "Local" name...like "Gerald" in the U.K but dont realise names like that are no longer popular.... If he called himself "Gerry" he would be more likely to win over cautious poeple.

When they are "buying" from you there is ALWAYS some kind of glitch delaying payment and their suggested "quickest and easiest" solution is usually is to get you to send the goods...while they sort it out.

They usually have a post office address for deliveries in the U.K. and someone to empty the post box.

If you suspect a scammer ask them some questions. Can you have a friend who lives in that country pick up the item and pay cash?
Or you will deliver your item to your friend and they will collect the money usually buggers em!

Alternatively ask them to nominate a local well known carrier in that country. Usually they cant.

Also some in depth questions about the item they are buying or selling. Usually they cant because they dont know cr@p about it. They also dont like spending extra time to-ing and fro-ing.

Sure many careful people ignore these thieves but they get their share of trusting people.

If it sounds too good to be true....it usually is.

There is no such thing as a genuine HK Bathurst tacho for a hundred bucks in the U.K....lol.

I hope this info helps
Cheers
Nick.
