Hi guys, I have a question as I am stumped as to what is going on. Vehicle is a HT 253 V8 Manual running standard WW Stromberg 2 barrel carby.

I had to take off my original AC fuel pump as diaphragm was leaking oil and sent it off to get fixed. So I bought and installed a Goss Fuel Pump (G25308A) to get by until then (as I have Bay to Birdwood this coming weekend) and had to bend the bundy tube to accommodate it. I also had a leak where the tube connects to the fuel pump but have managed to get it down to a weep ( I can’t eliminate completely)

Ever since then I have been having issues starting the car when the engine is hot/warm. It’s like I have fuel starvation. No issues on cold start up with the choke though and no issues when driving (although there is a slight jerkiness when trying to accelerate hard from 2nd gear when going around a roundabout )

I go to start the engine as per normal when warm/hot which is press pedal down about 1/3 of the way and crank the engine and normally engine will fire after 2-3 seconds. What is happening since I did the pump swap is the engine is cranking for at least 10 seconds before anything happens, it then splutters to life only to stall straight away.

I got a second pair of eyes to look down the carby when hot to see what happens when I press the pedal and I am getting not fuel spraying into carby on the first stroke of the pedal, if I press pedal again (towards the end of the stroke nearing the floor) I then get a tiny bit of spray and then the rest of the fuel just dribbles into the carby. I get nothing at the beginning of the pedal like I do when the carby is cold and I have fuel spraying into carby straight away without delay.

I have removed the fuel connection at the carby to make sure nothing is blocking the needle to the float and it is all clean and as it should be. I guess the test will be when I get my original pump back whether this will still do it, but given I have Bay to Birdwood this coming weekend I am trying to sort this out so I don’t get stuck somewhere cos I can’t restart my hot engine.

According to the Goss specs this fuel pump is 7PSI where as the AC one is started to be 4.5-5.75PSI. Would that be causing me issues by forcing too much fuel into the carby?

later fuel filters (before the carby) had a bleed off line back to the tank eg Hz with Air conditioning metal or valiants had the plastic Ryco style. These you may be able to feed back into a tee piece in the supply line. I may have dreamt it ! but your predicament reminded me of a fix tried on 308's with heat soak from too high a pressure which was to drill a 20 thou hole in a secret location in the pump. Never saw a bulletin for this, remember it could have been a dream. My boss was old school every new problem had a fix learnt from the old chev 4 days.

Just to update all, had my original AC pump overhauled and NOS kit put through it.

Fitted it back to the car and no more starting issues when hot. Can now just turn the key without the need to pump accelerator and engine starts straight away.

Not sure what the issue was but I am putting it down to the PSI rating of the aftermarket pump. Factory is 4-5 PSI and the aftermarket is 5-7 PSI.

Anyways its all fixed now and am a happy driver. Starts and drivers better then it did before having the pump overhauled.
