G'day guys

Im planning on changing the clutch on a VN v8 in the near future. (weekend job) Whilst at it I'm going to get the flywheel machined. To save having the box out for a few days or up to a week, would like to get a flywheel prepared first.
My question.. is red or blue motor v8 the same flywheel?

If you want to wait a day or so I’ll look at VN parts catalogue and see what the part number is. It’s on ‘fiche so a bit more work than normal. Pretty sure the flex plates are the same as HJ-WB with TH box so can’t see why the flywheel would differ unless it’s weighted differently or drilled differently for a T5 than an M15/M20/M21.

dunno about VNs EFI V8s (...can't find my parts catalogue)
but
on red/blue/black Carb engines (that is VB-VL) Holden used
THREE different flywheels - as follows
standard 253/308 #7434800
V5H/V7X hipo engine packs and VC HDT engines - #9934573
and
VK A9L # 92029523

The size and clutch cover drillings are the same..
(even though 253 used a smaller 9.6" clutch than 308s/304s)
the weight is the only difference...
7434800 is the heaviest, 92029523 the lightest

Just looking at VN parts catalogue.

Flywheel & Ring Gear VN V8 except XV2 is 7434800.

XV2 was 92060737 but superceded to 92061324 which is listed as “Flywheel, Ring Gear & Heat Soak Ring Assembly”. By the drawings the XV2 (VN Group A) had a special heat soak ring on the clutch. Looks like they stopped selling the flywheel alone as 92060737 and sold it with the heat soak ring.

So looks like standard VN V8 manual uses the same flywheel as most red, blue and black 253, 304 and 308. You are on a winner!

The number Smitty mentions 9934573 is just the LH L34 engine flywheel, resurrected for HDT and V5H engines etc. Listed as 22lb (9.97kg) for L34. The standard 7434800 lists as 32.13lb (14.57kg).

I will go that way, the worst that can happen would be a spare HQ flywheel, ready to use.

Actually technically HT flywheel, as they will be HT through to whenever they replaced it with the stupid dual mass one, maybe VS or VSII. Whoever they started fitting that awful Getrag box,

Why do you say that about the Getrag box, it was the best box for the V8's.
I thought that the get rag box flywheel is a safety reason.
Sure it's harder to re face, so it becomes a toss away thing more so.

Start of VT and VS V8 Series 2 from 8/1997 I believe the wonderful Getrag came out.

V6 Getrag came out in series 2 VS.

Getrags were horrible notchy boxes that broke easy. HSV used to pull them out as they weren’t up to the power of the uprated engines. They were always up for sale brand new really cheap, mate bought one to put in my old WB tonner I sold him, behind a VN headed 350 stroker, bloody huge box and expensive as hell for clutch and flywheel. I had one in a VSIII, not a nice box compared to many others but then I was still silly enough to buy manuals back then.

road Getrags .... as in what Holden specc'd for Commodores
are no cousin of the highly rated 'race' Getrags .. used in Sierras
BMWs, yeah Commodores and other race cars.

their torque rating is no better than a 6cyl T5 fitted to EA Falcons. But
they are big and spare parts rare .. and sell your children type costs for
simple stuff. Ever costed a gaskets/seals kit.? one of the guys in the
car club did... nla from Holden and $200 from a auto place in the UK

I always wondered what the hell were Holden thinking ...
