Hi All,

I am currently looking for a 308H engine to go in my HT. I have found a 15th August 1969 (H159) block but engine serial number reads 308H88***
Which doesn't seem to line up with holden production numbers. It has 308 cast into the passengers side of the block between the core plugs. 2 bolt mains

At the front of the engine next to the date code it has HOLDEN cast into it. Which I have never seen before. Seller claims it's a early repco block, Thicker webs etc.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me please. Or How to identify thicker webbing around mains without having a standard 308 to compare with.

F5000 engine’s weren’t made until 1973 so cannot be one of those, has to be a regular Holden 308.
Best way to describe the F5000/L34 blocks is go look at a HJ onwards 253 or 308 then you can see clearly.
What do you think is wrong with the engine number? Has to be close to the first of the 308 blocks with 308 on the side. I think they added more 308 patterns around that time as the demand for 308 outside of Brougham increased once 307 stocks diminished.

Will look at my blocks for the HOLDEN you refer to when I get time. The only easy one to get to is a 9/72 cast 308N block but no HOLDEN on it. I have a HT 308 block but hard to get to atm. From memory it has 308 on the side but has been decked.

The Holden cast on top of the block near the timing case is correct for these early 308s. My May 70 block has that too. My engine 308H18***. I have seen others around my date with comparable numbers. So you're number higher? Is it 88thouand or 8thousand something?

I was under the impression that 308H engine serial numbers started at 1001.
I have seen a October 1969 308H engine serial number 308H122** and a 308H166** on ebay recently March 1970. Sandaro's engine is May 1970 308H18***. These 3 engines make sense with there serial number sequence.
This engine is August 1969 and 308H88***. It would make sense if it was only 4 digits after the 308H but there are 5.
I thought the it may have been related to the repco theme.

The Repco F5000 engines were initially standard 308 bore with a reduced stroke crankshaft to produce 302 cubic inches. The later ones are a smaller bore with the standard stroke. Repco purchased partially machined castings from GM-H for that purpose. The castings have no thickened crank journal webs.
The most distinctive difference is that they are 4 bolt main bearings. There were other differences, such as special pistons, rods, etc but they were built with cast nodular iron crankshaft, not forgings.

When the seller said it's "A Repco block" maybe he meant it had been through the Repco engine reconditioning process.

The photos the seller has posted are average, so I can't really get a good idea on it being a genuine engine number stamping.
Thanks to everybody for there input, I think I will give this engine a miss and keep looking. Cheers KB

It could just be an old block GMH have fixed and built into an engine later. Not common but not rare. I have a 307 at home with 3 months between cast date and engine finish date, GMH were no different.
