Hi there,

So Dad and I have the car on the road and registered. So far so good, however we’ve noticed the steering has some ‘play’ in it where in the 12 o’clock position there’s a few degrees of play either side of 12 o’clock before the wheels actually start to turn.

To me it feels like worn gearing in the steering box.
Is this something that can be reconditioned at home (with new gearing etc) or are we better off to buy/find one reconditioned?

Is this a common issue and what are the usual causes and fixes?

Thanks again for the help :)

Steve

It may be worth investing in a reconditioned box from Rare Spares which has new worm gear and bearings.

Have you tried adjusting the steering box? The nut and screw on top change the angle of engagement to the worm gear- to a point mind you.
Oh, if I might say, the nylon bearing cage in the RS steering box renew kit really is a waste of time. And despite the popularist view, a black hole does not form if you dismantle the ball race/cage thingy on the worm gear, just take lots of photos and count the balls out and in.
