When were the clutch fans first introduced on the v8's. I've got two and I know the squarer bladed one's off a Wb 308 but the other one, which has rounder curved blades, has an old wreckers yellow texta Hq-87 on it. My old Hq Monaro had a 253 and it had a fixed fan with the extension spacer and I don't think the clutch fans fit with a spacer so was it the Hj?

Hi, HK with air - Cond 6 & 8 , had clutch type fan , some 5 blade and some 7 . (according to the parts book ) Mark.
life is good in "Wine & Holden Marlborough "

Anything with integrated or factory fit A/C HK onwards has one. As far as I am aware there is only two, the round blade up to the end of HZ and VC/WB through to VSIII used the square blade one.

AFAIK the square blade fans began with ADR28A, which was a noise regulation introduced 1/1/81.

This would place the change at mid-VC & 2nd year production of WB.

Thanks for the info guys, I didn't know Hk had them. My brougham or the Hq Monaro didn't come with aircon. I now understand that if you needed a spacer it must have been studs and not bolts.

It's always good when you learn something new

I looked it up and I think you are right, there is pre and post ADR28A fans listed for WB. The long and short water pumps are also in the same area of the notes, did this happen at the same time? I don't have enough WB ID plate photos to nail the exact time ADR28A appeared, probably when BWB chassis numbers start which appears to be either 12/80 or 1/81 which aligns with 1/81 introduction.

I'm pretty sure that the large bearing water pumps (both 6 & V8) were introduced at he same time as the new fans.

I'm almost 100% certain that was the case, as I played with quite a few early cars 20+ years back, and found a mix of long & short pumps in VC, and the varying fan spacers & pulleys.
Most were SL/Es with factory air, so had a clutch fan from factory. A few base model parts cars still had non-viscous fans on them.

I initially thought the variations in the spacers & pulley offsets was only because of the length of the water pump bearing, and never paid attention to the fan blades themselves, but it would make sense now, and you're right - it does align with a late 1980 changeover period.

Time to hit the 1980 TSBs!
