G'day again fellas

I've done a bit more digging and the exhaust has, as expected, been replaced. The dual pipes cross over up the front of the vehicle and merge into a single system. This car also does have central locking the bloody fuses were all loose in the panel so at least this verifies it is a normal build. Just wondering if anyone has a photo of what the A/C switch looks like please. Also are there aftermarket (eg rare spares) that do replacement crash pads, mine is knackered.

Thanks

Nige

I was nearly going to post that if you had the sliding type locks, it should have central locking, as they were only fitted to central locking cars prior to 1985 (in about April 85 they made them standard, as a theft deterrent measure, but prior to that it was only with central locking).
The SL/Es without central locking had the regular vertical "pin" type lock buttons on the top of the door.

As far as the aircon switch - it's the same as any other VH Commodore (and VC air international A/C) which is a 3 way (centre off) rocker switch that has norm and recirc written on the switch. Here's an example on gumtree: http://www.gumtree.com.a...h-dash-switch/1117626453

The crashpad is a tough one. There's nothing available as a repro, and more than 10 years ago Holmart were selling "NOS" ones - but they were VK.
Only a VH crashpad will suit - VB/VC have an additional hole/relief for the RTS badge that was removed on VH. They also don't have the holes in the metal brace for the speakers.
VK has the holes in the metal (foam only cut out on Calais) but is different at the perimeter of the binnacle opening, and doesn't work in a VH (trust me, I tried after buying the NOS Holmart one & finding it was VK).

You can source one from any VH and simply cut the holes with a kitchen knife (that's what I eventually did), but even good 2nd hand ones were scarce in the late 90s, so they'd be hard to find these days. You may have to bite the bullet & send it to a dash restorer. I've heard good things about one in Adelaide, and the example of their work in a VC Brock was impeccible, but there's also a lot of horror stories, so ask around for happy customers before sending it anywhere.
Cheers,

Mick

I don't think you could actually fit a proper twin system on them could you?

Yep you could put twin exhaust on them, a mate had a VC 3.3L with twin exhaust but chev type coming down and pointing to the road and out behind both the rear wheels.

2 1/2 single was a simple and cheap way to go, but sound like crap a lot of the time.

I think that if you ran the standard single pipes from the manifold back to the same spot where Holden joins them into single you can get a OK note but if you mess it up where they join they can sound like total crap, you get this annoying blob blob blob noise as the exhaust pulse timing must be hammering out of sync, sounds somewhat like one plug lead is off and it's really painful to hear and only some single exhaust Ford V8 Cleveland do it as well that I have heard.

All the exhaust shops loved fitting the single system to the VB to VL and would stand there and point out that a 308 with a 1 1/2 single will out perform a twin 2 1/4 every time, they were all just pissing into the wind, not to mention the problems with putting up with that shitty drone noise you can get.

G'day again fellas,

Hey what's the go with the different dash styles for VB - VH? I've noticed wood grain, silver and the standard black. Were they an option that the buyer chose?

Cheers

No, they weren't options - the model & trim level determined the finish on the cluster mask & switch panel surrounds, but most ebay sellers these days simply spam anything up with keywords like SL/E Brock HDT SS etc, adding to the confusion.

VB base model had the silver.
VB SL from memory had a fake woodgrain that looked real fake.
VB SL/E had the fake woodgrain that was more realistic.

VC L & SL had silver.
VC SL/E had black brushed finish.

VH all had the black brushed finish, but the finish on the mask became square around the gauges instead of round.

The warning light assignments are also different between the trim levels, and in VH also introduced the low fuel light on some models.

VB SL had that Rosewood look, as Commodorenut above said looks relaly fake.
VB SL/E had Burl Walnut look, prob wouldn't look to bad if they had a clear overcoat on them...
The Commodore SL/E fanatic.
