CLASSIC CAR SHOW 2002
Time-defying DeLorean to be a star at Whiteman Park
Even the stoutest Irishman would
have to admit that Ireland has never been among the world’s leading
carmakers, in fact the Irish only ever produced one car model.
But the one
they did make was a beauty.
It
was the DeLorean DMC-12, a car that is both famous and infamous in
automobile history.
The
DeLorean will have place of pride on St Patrick’s Day (March 17)
when it goes on display at Whiteman Park in the annual Marlows Classic
Car Show. The theme for this year’s event in the northern environs
of Perth, Western Australia, will be Cars of All
Nations.
As the
brainchild of flamboyant millionaire, John Z. DeLorean, the futuristic
vehicle was first manufactured in 1981 but its production cost was
very high because of its technical complexity. Its release was
surrounded by controversy and its designer was rarely out of the
headlines as he fought off bankruptcy.
There
was no doubting that he had produced a sensational car, but DeLorean
and his DMC-12 met their demise when he faced drugs charges in the
US. DeLorean was exonerated but it was too late - the damage to his
reputation lasted long enough to sound the death knell.
One of his cars, suitably modified with outlandish gadgetry, later
found fame as a time-machine in the Back To The Future series of
movies. And that’s just one of the stars at this year’s show.
The
Combined Car Clubs of Australia, representing 92 motoring clubs, are
the co-organisers of the Marlows Classic Car Show, which offers plenty
of family entertainment with many free activities for the children.
